When you sign in to Yahoo Mail, you may receive an error message that reads "There is a screen resolution problem"; this notice is designed to prevent unexpected behavior from your online email clients, since Yahoo Mail was optimized for a minimum screen resolution of 1024 pixels in width, and 768 pixels in height. But if you are using your screen in "portrait mode" (vertical, instead of the standard, horizontal "landscape mode"), you may not have enough width, or not enough height depending on the proportions of your laptop display - this is also true with netbooks, which typically allow only for limited screen resolution settings. This tutorial explores the implications of this error message, and how you can bypass it to use Yahoo Mail and check your email messages.
Here is a screenshot preview of the error message you may receive: (this one comes from the all new Yahoo Mail beta, but a very similar notice is also visible for the standard Yahoo Mail - either Yahoo Mail Classic or the standard -new- Yahoo Mail).
The solution your offers is to manually change your screen resolution and then reload the page to access your emails; in reality, you don't need to do that, and most of the time, you will still be able to use Yahoo Mail normally, without any side effects other than having to scroll a bit more than usually. If you scroll down a bit on the error message page, you should notice a link that still gives you the choice to proceed with your current screen resolution, or offers you to switch back to Yahoo Mail Classic.
If you are using the new Yahoo Mail beta version, you will see the following option: just click on the "Go to Yahoo Mail Beta" link to safely ignore the warning and proceed to checking your email account. If you are using the standard Yahoo Mail, just click on the corresponding link that allows you to bypass the error message without having to change your screen resolution, and you will end up as usual in your inbox!
As a web application (a program that runs online, as opposed to being downloaded on your computer), Yahoo Mail has to deal with thousands of combinations of different operating systems, screen resolutions, web browser variants, etc. This is why you may receive weird notices when it doesn't quite recognize your settings as being standard. In this particular case, it is nothing to worry about, at the very worse a minor annoyance since your email interface will look too big for your monitor and screen resolution.
This is the error message you will receive in the same conditions, when you are using the current version of Yahoo Mail; here a screenshot of the link you should be looking for to ignore the error message and go directly to your emails and inbox:
